2023 Sonoma Valley "Compagni Portis" White Wine
100% Field blend of Gewurztraminer, Trousseau gris, Riesling, and other mixed whites
Our first fruit of the vintage, 2.4 tons of fruit from this 69-year-old vineyard were picked September 18th. This is the second latest harvest we’ve experienced with this vineyard, eclipsed only by the 2011 that was picked two days later on September 20th. Fully destemmed, the fruit was macerated for a couple of hours before being gently pressed. Fermented in stainless steel, it remained on the lees until racking on October 29th. Aged completely in stainless barrels and, as usual, no malolactic fermentation to preserve acidity. Filtered, but not fined, for stability.
Tasting Note:
Pale, straw yellow. A beautiful nose redolent of red apple, lime, and pear is lightly accented by notes of antique roses. In the mouth, medium-bodied with a gentle, tender palate of white orchard fruits and spice. Finishes quite clean and refreshing thanks to sound acidity and a touch of phenolic grip. Absolutely lovely. Compagni Portis has surprised me in its ability to age and this final example will be no exception. Enjoy from release through 2035. (MRO - 07/16/25)
