2017 Santa Lucia Highlands "Sierra Mar Vineyard" Syrah
Sierra Mar was picked on October 6th at 25.2 Brix. As usual, the two selections, Alban 1 and Alban “Baby Block”, were co-fermented for additional complexity. Twenty percent whole cluster, an uninoculated fermentation (at this point of the harvest, sometimes it’s difficult to keep a tank cold soaking as the winery is teaming with yeast), and 26 days on the skins. All French oak, only 20% new, and bottled unfined and unfiltered.
Dark ruby-purple. A knockout nose of blackberry, savory herbs, and smoked meat. Smooth as silk on entry, flavors of black and blue fruits are intertwined with a note of roasted game and espresso. Finishes quite long with gentle tannin keeping the palate refreshed. We suggest giving it another year in bottle and then enjoying through 2030.
