2005 Knights Valley "Pelkan Ranch" Syrah
The fruit for this wine was picked on October 12th from the very rocky, shale-laden Pelkan Ranch at 1000’ elevation above Knights Valley. Fully destemmed, the must was cold soaked for 5 days before inoculation for fermentation. Pressed sweet at 5 brix, the wine was barreled down in all French oak, 50% new, to finish fermentation. Bottled unfiltered.
Opaque black-purple. Aromas of black plums, blackberries, and crème de cassis are highlighted by notes of spring flowers and pain grillé. On the palate, opulent and full-bodied with near perfect balance. Easily the finest we have done to date with this vineyard. While enjoyable now with decanting, optimum drinking should be 2009 through 2016. (MRO – 10/15/07)
