Our last fruit of the year, Rosella’s Syrah rolled into the winery on October 27th at 24.1 Brix.  We have had many wonderful Rosella’s Syrahs over the years but I cannot recall one that has moved me, has so ensnared my senses, as much as this 2018.  This has become my new benchmark Santa Lucia Highland Syrah.  It represents what I hope to achieve in every vintage.  Twenty-two percent whole cluster.  Uninoculated fermentation.  Twenty-two days on the skins.  Pressed to all French oak, 19% new.  Bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Santa Lucia Highlands "Rosella's Vineyard" Syrah

Tasting Note:

Nearly opaque dark ruby-purple. An intoxicating nose of violets, white pepper, smoked game, and black raspberry. So Northern Rhône-ish. On the palate, medium-full bodied with explosive flavors of blueberry, black raspberry (I’m reminded of those Haribo black raspberry candies), black pepper, and savory herbs such as sage and bay. Seamless. Harmonious. Special. Drink from release through 2030. (MRO - 07/10/20)
