Regrettably, this is the last vintage of The Derivative that will contain Semillon from Monte Rosso.  Gallo is no longer interested in selling fruit to other producers.  But not to worry.  In 2016, we secured a new source of top-flight Semillon from Rossi Ranch.  Along with the Muscadelle from Pagani Ranch and the Colombard, Muscadelle, and Palomino from Mancini Ranch, The Derivative lives on!  As usual, the Semillon was fermented in a mix of old, neutral oak and stainless.  The other components were done in stainless.  No malolactic fermentation to preserve acidity and freshness.  Filtered but not fined.

Tasting Note: Pale straw-yellow in color.  Quinine, grapefruit, quince, and citrus pith all stand out in the engaging aromas.  Medium bodied, yellow fruits mingle with a slight herbaceous note reminding me of newly baled hay.  Plenty of verve and minerality in the refreshing finish.  Fruitier (but not riper) than the ’14.  There is precious little Derivative in 2016 so if you are a fan of this wine, this is your opportunity to stock up.  Drink from release through 2024.
