Carlisle Winery is a small, ultra-premium wine producer located in Santa Rosa, California specializing in old-vine zinfandel, and red Rhône varietals. While most of our fruit is sourced from vineyards throughout Sonoma County (including our own 10 acres of zinfandel planted in 1927 and two acres of mourvèdre and mixed blacks planted in 1910, both in the Russian River Valley), we also work with fruit from some exceptional vineyards in Napa, Santa Lucia Highlands, and Paso Robles. Total case production for 2008 will be approximately 5500 cases or roughly 100 tons.

Carlisle Winery Harvest Internship Position

Are you looking for a rewarding, fun, and highly educational experience in winemaking and grape growing? Then look no further! We seek a highly motivated individual to join our small winemaking team in a three to four month position for harvest 2008.

The ideal applicant should be enthusiastic, dependable, self-motivated, and detail oriented. Excellent communication skills and the ability to perform some physically demanding tasks are also beneficial traits. The applicant should possess, or be in the process of acquiring, a BS/MS in Enology/Viticulture or Food Science. If not, previous winemaking experience of at least one to two harvests is required.

Duties will include:

  • Working side-by-side in vineyard with winemaker and owner performing fine-tuning viticulture tasks such as suckering, leaf-pulling, and green dropping (an excellent opportunity to have in-depth discussions on viticulture and winemaking!)
  • Visiting vineyard sites & monitoring grape maturity with owner and winemaker
  • Assisting owner in managing picks
  • Crushpad work (fruit sorting, crushing/destemming, filling fermentors, etc.)
  • General cellar work (pumpovers/punchdowns, yeast/nutrient additions, press operation, racking, sanitation, etc.)
  • Basic lab work (Brix, pH, temperature, etc.)
  • Data recording

Carlisle Winery is situated in a custom crush facility located in northwest Santa Rosa. This provides the additional bonus of exposure to other fruit sources/varieties as well as other winemakers and winemaking practices. And since each custom crush client has typically at least one intern, it provides a great opportunity to make new friends, friends who also share a passion for all things vinous!
